I’m writing for a specialised local history series published by Amberley Publishing, called The Secret Series. It is about unearthing little-known facts, secret histories of a particular area – in my case, I wrote about the area I grew up in just outside of London called Hayes, in Middlesex (there’s another Hayes in Kent).
Even I had a few surprises whilst researching, such as previously working as a secretary in a listed building, growing up on an estate that is now of ‘local historical interest’ by the local council; this means it’s not quite full of listed buildings but has historical importance, mainly due to design. A famous Elizabethan judge is buried in the local church, that despite being a London suburb, the area was still partly agricultural right up until the 1950’s and the Hollywood actress, Jane Seymour, was born just down the road!
