My First Guided History Walk in Monmouth

My First Guided History Walk in Monmouth

View to Vauxhall Fields, the most probable site of The Battle of Monmouth in 1233. In the shadow of the once glorious Monmouth Castle, behind the wall is the River Monnow where the Castle Bridge would have been. Many men and horses lost their lives in November 1233 as the battle raged between Baldwin III of Flanders, custodian of Monmouth Castle and Richard Marshal of Chepstow Castle.
Simon Jones of Wye Valley Walks, who arranged this walk using my book Secret Monmouth as a guide, discussing the remains of the old church within the newer Victorian one. There was possibly an 8th century Celtic Church on this site, as noted in the Book of Llandaff.
Many thanks to those that attended, despite the threat of rain (which held off thankfully!)
